Center Wisconsin.(390) Joseph is reported
as a cotton weaver apprentice in Colne, Lancashire, England in 1851. He is reported
to have been a cotton weaver while living in Rhode Island in 1855. He visited
his brother John in Springvale, Fond du Lac County, WI, in 1855 and again in
Hixton, Jackson County, WI, in 1856. He purchased 80 acres of government land
for which he paid $1.25 per acre near the village of Hixton, WI, in 1856. He
cleared and sold the land the following year. Joseph and Sarah moved to Hixton,
WI (from Rhode Island) in 1862. Joseph's occupation was listed as a farmer.
He and Sarah purchased a farm from Sarah's brother in Hixton, WI (Township 22
North, Range 6 West, Section 24 SW1/4 - 80 acres) in March of 1874. In November
of 1877, they sold the farm in Hixton and acquired a new homestead in North Branch,
Garden Valley, Jackson County, WI
(Township 23 North, Range 5 West, Section 29 NE 1/4 - 160 acres). Joseph and
Sarah moved to Alma Center, WI in 1898. In circa July of 1898, Joseph purchased
the Alma Center Livery business. His son, Louis, attended to business affairs
and Joseph attended to long haul and commercial travelers. In circa September
1899, Joseph sold the livery business, and he and Louis acquired a livery business
in Blair, Trempealeau County, WI. Joseph and Sarah moved to Alma Center, Jackson
County, WI in 1904. Joseph was a landlord for the livery business. He signed
