NOTE ON 1841 CENSUS

The Census Return is cross referenced with the Family Trees using the census folio numbers and the Family Tree Sheet numbers. Wife's maiden name is also quoted where known. 1851 Census ages and Folio Nos are given in brackets where known.

The Census shows five distinct groupings of DUXBURY families:

(i) Duckworth Street; includes Henry, George & Union Streets in the present town centre near the site of the Co-Op.

(ii) Bolton Street; includes the side roads of Foundry St & Mill Lane, and is the main road south from the Circus going up to Whitehall.

(iii) Hoddlesden; includes nearby farmsteads of Scotland and Top o' Meadow and is the village between Blacksnape and Pickup Bank

(iv) Eccleshill or Chapels; includes Tythe Barn, Knowle Fold and Robin Bank as well as Brocklehead Farm to the east and Sunnyhurst to the west.

(v) Pole Lane; includes Dangerous Corner, Hutticrew, Catleach, Sough and Bent and is the old road leading from Sough to Blacksnape

Ages of adults in the 1841 census are often to the nearest 5 years. Relationships and detailed locations of birth are not given. Identifying the census to the parish registers can therefore be imprecise, unless there is a good run of children.
