A DUXBURY Family Website

Duxbury Hall in 1846

Please note revised URL & E-mail addresses

My cousin, Peter Duxbury, spent many hours assembling the information for this Duxbury website.  Now that he is no longer with us, it would be a pity if his work did not remain available to others and hence I agreed to take over the maintenance of the site.  I will not be able to devote the time and resources that Peter did, but I hope to be able to keep the information up to date when I receive relevant information from others.

Peter said that it was only a matter of time before links were found between the three main lines of Duxbury.  Unfortunately this was not to happen in his lifetime, but it would be a fitting memorial to Peter if the connections between these three lines could be shown on the web site which he established.

Those of you who have visited this web site before will notice changes.  These have been brought about by my need to source appropriate software to maintain the site, as it was not clear what software Peter had been using.

If you have information to update the details on this site, please let me know and also provide me with the source of that information.

A message from Margaret Duxbury

Peter Norman Duxbury 1943-2005

I write to bring the sad news that Peter died of multiple myeloma on 7th September 2005.

I thank those with whom I have already been in contact for their kind condolences.

I was married to Peter for 39 years. He was a kind, generous and loving husband and I and the family miss him very much. Many of you know that for many years he was dogged by depression but when he was well, he was fun, had a great sense of humour, was highly intelligent, lively minded and had a great sense of curiosity.

Peter was, of course, a Lancastrian and very proud of his ancestry. His initial interest in his family tree was stimulated by his cousin, Ronald, who, many moons ago, produced a paper version of the immediate family. In the late 1990s he was in contact with Tony Foster and Helen Moorwood and began to put together much of the information that they (and others) provided onto a website. So began worldwide contacts with members of various lines of the Duxbury family, many of whom visited him here in Milton Keynes and who were a source of great pleasure to him.

I remember him poring over birth, marriage and death certificates, sometimes soliciting my help to decipher them. He would also search the available censuses discovering where Duxburys lived and the jobs they did providing him with an insight into the kinds of lives they led often in Lancashire cotton towns. The names of characters such as Henri de Duxbury from the 12th century became familiar to me and perhaps more particularly Miles Standish, the Pilgrim Fathers, the town of Duxbury in Massachusetts, the possible link to Deorwuc in the 9th or 10th century (I think!).  Then there were the contemporary Duxbury names – Helen Moorwood, Tony Foster, Ray Aspden, Geoff Duxbury in the UK; Don and Ruth, Doris Forkin, Marilyn Cox, John T. Duxbury and Emily in the USA; Jack Dukesbury in Indonesia; Susan Neumann in Germany and many others.

Peter leaves me, his wife, two sons, Mark and Michael, a dear daughter-in-law, Neung from Thailand, and a delightful granddaughter, Jennifer – and we look forward to a new addition to the family in December. We all miss Peter very much but I am blessed with a kind and loving family and many good friends.

I would also like to pay tribute to Peter’s friend, Jerry Dennis, who has been a great help to me in sorting out technical issues on the computers including the website, and continues to do so.

With good wishes to you all.

Margaret Duxbury (May 2006)

Please be aware that Margaret will be unable to help you with any Family Tree enquiries. Please direct these to Ronald Taylor who will do his best to help but please remember that he does not have the knowledge that Peter built up over the years.
This site will remain a testament and tribute to the hours of work and diligent research that Peter Duxbury dedicated to the Duxbury name.
If you find this site of use and if you feel like expressing your thanks, please drop Margaret
a short email in recognition of Peter's efforts.
Thank you

Recent Events - June 2008

1. More names added and corrections made to the Family Tree

2. Request from Margaret Hargreaves for any information on the ancestors of Alice Ann Duxbury 1869-1956 who was Margaret's first cousin three times removed. Please contact Margaret with any information. You can find Margaret and Alice Ann in the Main Family Tree file.

3. An additional Family Tree of the Taylors has been added. Compared to the Duxbury tree this is only a small tree of some 66 names at present and links to the Duxbury Tree through my parents. The information, such as it is, is believed to be correct and it is hoped that it is inclusion will inspire others to provide information which will enable its expansion. It is intended to include a Prestwich Family Tree in due course. My paternal great grand mother was a Prestwich.

4. The link to the descendants of Ralph Duxbury of Colne now points to an area of this website as the previous link was broken. The details are belived to be the same.

History and Family Tree over 1000 Years By Peter Duxbury

{short description of image}

The DUXBURY family originated in Duxbury, near Chorley in Lancashire, England sometime between 600 and 900 CE (AD). The name Duxbury is believed to have been derived from Deowuc's Burgh, from the original settlement founded by Deowuc, an Angle. From Duxbury the family slowly spread out, initially northeastwards within Lancashire, but as time passed, across the whole country (thinly) and overseas. It was estimated in 1995 that less than 2400 households worldwide bear the surname DUXBURY. Many thousands more can trace their ancestry to the DUXBURY line. This website outlines some of the known family history from the earliest times through to the present day and contains a family tree in a format that the viewer can manipulate.
